Large-Scale Food Fortification: A Methodology to Identify Opportunities to Engage the Food Industry
The Methodology to Identify Opportunities for Engaging the Food Industry on Large-Scale Food Fortification was commissioned by USAID’s Center for Nutrition within the Bureau for Resilience, Environment and Food Security, as a complement to its Large-Scale Food Fortification Programming Guide, which established that large-scale food fortification (LSFF) is an evidence-based and cost-effective, system-level intervention that has the potential to improve diets and nutrition when appropriately designed and implemented. This rapid assessment methodology provides tools and templates to conduct LSFF programming in accordance with the guide, including:
- LSFF Market Assessment Insights.
- Guidance to Manage and Conduct an LSFF Market Assessment.
- Research Protocol.
- Stakeholder Interview Guides.
- Case Examples.
- Downloadable and Customizable Templates.
This document provides a methodology for LSFF stakeholders to assess industrial food industry capacity and intends to generate critical insights required to identify context-relevant, feasible LSFF opportunities in line with the USAID LSFF Results Framework. Conducting an accurate assessment of the industrial food industry’s capacity to support LSFF is complex because there are multiple stakeholders in the market system. Any assessment must be context-specific, and the approach must be tailored to engage the private sector. The methodology and tools included are designed to be used together and in sequence as guidance to think through and address LSFF programming complexities.
