Empowering Marginalized Youth Through Training in Agriculture and Literacy: Lessons from the USAID/Nepal Education for Income Generation Program
Event Information
USAID/Nepal’s Education for Income Generation (EIG) Program integrated approach combines market driven high value agricultural training with an applied literacy course for marginalized youth. The literacy course covers health, nutrition, numeracy, civic engagement, micro enterprise and micro-credit. The combination of economic and basic skills training is changing young people’s lives, especially women and is improving food security. They gain self-confidence needed to successfully engage in economic activities outside the household, and gain respect of their family members, changing their status in the household. This approach addresses many of the barriers that contribute to food insecurity.
