EVENT NAME Livestock and Climate Smart Agriculture Innovations EVENT DATE: TUESDAY, 16 NOVEMBER, 2021 - 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM EVENT BY: SHAUNTICE MCCORKLE Posted Questions [10:25 AM] Bernard Kimoro asked : The work done on supporting emission reductions in the innovation lab mainly focus on sedentary livestock systems where feeds types and diets are easy to manipulate. What is being done in ruminant pastoral systems that are dominant in SSA? 4 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [09:59 AM] Dick asked : In societies that work with both crops and animals: 1. How much time is required each day to take care of the animals? 2. How does this impact on time and caloric energy available to manage the crops? 3 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:00 AM] Hassan Aidid Madar asked : Please share with participants event's contents 3 upvotes | 1 answer | 1 reply Michael Saltz answered - Hi Hassan! We will be sending all who registered a copy of the slides, events recording, and chat. Hassan Aidid Madar replied - Many thanks [10:19 AM] Hosea Yakubu asked : How can one get an accurate carbon emission tracker for livestock? 3 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:33 AM] Peetambar Dahal asked : Even food quality is of concern in developing countries. Often, food unfit for human consumption is fed to animals/birds. Will you work towards instituting feed quality monitoring systems in developing countries? 3 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:46 AM] anonymous asked : Organizations are promoting a lot of climate smart livestock technologies; however, the adoption rate is very low. What is the problem behind this issue? 3 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:48 AM] Adriana Paolantonio asked : @Polly: on data availability & tier2 estimates, what are the main data gaps for the smallholder livestock sector and is there a role for large scale/nationally repres. HH & agric. surveys to fill in those gaps (also considering integration with other data sources via georeferencing for example)? 3 upvotes | 1 answer | 1 reply Polly Ericksen answered - Hi Adriana, yes! once we gather data for the set of "representative" livestock systems across smallholder systems, then we need to scale up, using both hh surveys and geospatial tools. Adriana Paolantonio replied - Thanks for your reply, Polly! I work at the Data Production & Methods unit of the World Bank and we are keen to learn how to improve methods for collecting livestock data that could inform tier 2 (and beyond) emission inventory models as part of multi-scope HH and farm surveys. Thanks! [09:59 AM] Dick asked : 4. If contract mechanization was reliable available how much of this land could be converted to crop land? 5. and if so, how much would that improve of food security and promote poverty alleviation? 6. Is the degree a society relies on animal power a good informal index of the entrenched poverty? 2 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:23 AM] Jennifer Karsner asked : @Dick, what I've seen in Niger was that conversion from pasture to crop land increased poverty and reduced food security, not the other way around. I don't think it's a solid assumption that crops lead to increased food security across all ecotypes. 2 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:34 AM] Derreck Ekanem asked : What opportunities are there for youth to get involved in mitigating the negative impact of climate change on livestock production in Africa and now does that relate to including youth in international trade? 2 upvotes | 1 answer | 0 reply Polly Ericksen answered - You may want to look at the activities of CAYSN.. a climate action youth network. Also the research of my colleague Renee Bullock. [10:44 AM] Bernard Kimoro asked : The estimated emissions from the agricultural sector account for 14.5% of the global emissions. Do we account for the sinks through the forage production in intensive systems and the grasslands and rangelands....is the 14.5% net emissions from livestock? 2 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:50 AM] anonymous asked : Do we have concrete evidence again adoption of climate smart technologies benefit cost issue including market's willingness to buy those? Is it evident that cost of production will not increase due to these technologies adoption? 2 upvotes | 1 answer | 0 reply Polly Ericksen answered - HI anonymous, we indeed need more evidence on the costs of behaviour change. [10:09 AM] Nino Jason D. Lagatic asked : What significant practices of Livestock and Crops Integration to the Food Feed System of both animal handler and their animals? 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:28 AM] Dr. SENY FAYE asked : Hello everyone and thank you for this interesting online event. Will the slides be shared with participants? 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:50 AM] anonymous asked : What level of emission intensity improvements do we need to achieve to stay within a 1.5 degree world? 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:51 AM] Gary Alex asked : How do livestock compare with wildlife in terms of emissions? I understand that the number of ruminants in North America is about the same as when there were herds of buffalo and deer. How do wildlife emissions compare? 1 upvote | 1 answer | 0 reply Polly Ericksen answered - Good question.... I don't have the answer, but land use has changed quite a bit since then which changes the GHG footprint of livestock relative to wildlife. [10:52 AM] Olatunde A. ODERINWALE asked : Please I want to know if the lecture materials will be available. Thank you for the presentation. 1 upvote | 1 answer | 0 reply Cate Flanley answered - Yes, all who registered will be sent a copy of the slides and a recording of the event. I do appreciate the importance of animal products in the food system but the affordability may by a problem with limited dietary caloires. 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:34 AM] Sadou Soumana asked : @Dick, 1) in addition to the 3 mentioned innovations, can you give other top 3 innovations of climate innovation adapted to the west Africa livestock adaption to the climate with minimum GHG emission, 2) can we have access to these 50 innovations you mentioned developed by FAO? 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:38 AM] Gracia Maria Lanza Castillo asked : If mitigation is a co-benefit of adaptation how do you deal with donors who focused on mitigation, and have somehow earmarked the funding for mitigation... 0 upvote | 1 answer | 1 reply Polly Ericksen answered - Thanks Gracia, we have to make the case that adaptation is a form of mitigation. Livestock are really important assets that people rely on in times of stress as well as to diversify their production systems. If you take them away you leave producers very vulnerable. Also the "mitigation co-benefits".. many practices to help adapt can also reduce mitigation intensities. Gracia Maria Lanza Castillo replied - Thanks Polly, really interesting presentation. [10:46 AM] Helena Wright asked : I would be great to find out more about how USAID is working on agricultural innovation across the food supply chain (Helena, FAIRR) 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:47 AM] anonymous asked : Presentation was precise to the points 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:48 AM] Miguel Leal asked : What is the potential of holistic grazing? 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:57 AM] Walther Navas asked : The most important thing is to reach private companies and establish clear and reachble targets per countries. Would like to have a session to know every app and certification that has been created and to mitigate climate change. 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [11:01 AM] Birgit Habermann asked : Would technologies not be adopted by users anyway if they were suited to users and needed by them? If we need to "convince" users then there is probably sth wrong with the technology. 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [11:01 AM] Gracia Maria Lanza Castillo asked : Thank you!! very nice ppt 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [11:03 AM] Dr. SENY FAYE asked : Very interesting online event and very rich exchanges.
