EVENT NAME Accelerating the Impact of Irrigation and Landscape-Level AWM at Scale EVENT DATE: THURSDAY, 19 MAY, 2022 - 09:30 AM to 11:00 AM EVENT BY: SHAUNTICE MCCORKLE Posted Questions [09:50 AM] Luke Colavito asked : There is a growing body of evidence that Multiple Use Water Systems (MUS) are more sustainable, cost-effective, and meet household needs. Yet MUS fall between silos. It is important for the research community to document and support scaling MUS approaches (Luke Colavito, Senior Economist, iDE) 9 upvotes | 1 answer | 1 reply Petra Schmitter answered - Luke, often we see the same technology used for irrigation as for domestic, and livestock drinking, i am not sure what you mean with MUS technologies all between silos? I think it is more a question about how productive use can support non productive uses of the households in a way that it is equitable and support water security for all involved. It requires us to understand gendered preferences on the technology, the barriers preventing households from aquisition and the need for financial support etc....Together with RWSN we have been looking at the intersection between MUS and Farmer-led irrigation development because there is a lot of complementarity and synergy there Luke Colavito replied - Thank you for the response. Good to hear MUS is on your all radar. By silos I mean that donors and governments of prohibit or don't support design of multiple use systems but in practice nearly all systems are multiple use as rural households have many needs for water, agriculture, livestock, domestic use, and also small enterprises. This World Water Day webinar highlights MUS issues https://nepalmusnetwork.wordpress.com/2021/03/23/mus-in-decentralized-water-development-march-22-2021/ [10:27 AM] ANASTASE JARIBU asked : A. JARIBU As we all know, irrigation is about soil -water relationship. It is very important to emphasize on determining the land and soil suitability for irrigation. prior to engage or invest into irrigation. This will be a key factor to determine on whether to invest in irrigation... 6 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:18 AM] John Scicchitano asked : Could you address the cost/benefit comparison of hydrocarbon and solar pumps ? 5 upvotes | 1 answer | 0 reply Petra Schmitter answered - You might find this article interesting: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2020EF001611 [10:26 AM] Maryam Abdulmalik asked : How do we make solar pumps less expensive to small holder farmers ? 4 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:31 AM] Martin Fisher asked : So far research has looked at systems and technologies that have benefitted at best tens of thousands of smallholder farmers. We need to reach millions! What scalable technologies and models has the panel seen that can be quickly scaled up to reach millions of smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa? 4 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:19 AM] ANASTASE JARIBU asked : I think there is a need to make an inventory of successful experiences for small and medium scale irrigation in Africa from which we can learn and build up from these. I know of many successful experience in this respect in Zimbabwe and South Africa which are interesting. 3 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [09:56 AM] James Kamunge asked : There is need for a comparative analysis of best return to investment (socio-economic) between 2 upvotes | 1 answer | 0 reply Petra Schmitter answered - Absolutely James, this might be an article of interest: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2020EF001611 [10:16 AM] Perez L. Kemeni Kambiet asked : What about the implications of Irrigation adoption on shifts in smallholder crop choice during seasons??? 2 upvotes | 1 answer | 2 replies Petra Schmitter answered - I think that is a great question, we see that farmers diversify, shift crop choices as they produce more for markets... it would be great to actually do a proper quantification at a global level as reporting has been very piecemeal so far Perez L. Kemeni Kambiet replied - To a certain extent, Type of irrigation systems used can even be tide to changes crop choice, adoption of new crop varieties and crop diversification Perez L. Kemeni Kambiet replied - Thanks Petra for the response [10:18 AM] Edouard Nizeyimana asked : Q. to speakers. How do we address the issue of de-risking agriculture/farming for irrigation investments to be more productive? 2 upvotes | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:18 AM] Hichem Mihoub asked : What accessible solutions and models, the planel has seen, that could be scaled up quickly to reach out to millions of smallholders in Sub-Sahara Africa? With the vision to revamp production, could we link up for further discussion and knowledge sharing in regards to advancing irrigation technology in Ghana? However, in recent times water contents of many major water bodies (rivers and streams) appear less supportive due to seasonal wilting. For the same water bodies, seasonal flooding occurs. I am thinking of drip irrigation using rainwater harvesting system. This has shown successful results in many parts of developing countries,. 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:53 AM] Martin Fisher asked : what is the best solution to the fact that solar pumps only work when the sun shines but you often need to irrigate on cloudy days? And storage water/batteries is still very expensive. What is the best solution for farmers? 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [10:53 AM] Luke Colavito asked : Given the climate challenge it is critical that solar pumping be prioritized. It important to develop carbon payment systems linked with solar irrigation suppliers based on data streamed from solar pumps. 1 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [09:59 AM] Annette FAY asked : Who should we send our research priorities on irrgiation & AWM to? 0 upvote | 1 answer | 0 reply Zach Stewart (USAID) answered - Please add them to the chat function so we can compile them. [10:13 AM] Edouard Nizeyimana asked : There seems to be a huge gap between Research findings/progress and operational field for scaling up. Perhaps it is the right time to reflect and re-boost ag.extension and explore how it would be connected to what is going in research. I very much value the speakers insights on cacity building. 0 upvote | 1 answer | 0 reply Petra Schmitter answered - Edouard i think the points earlier made by several pannelists recognizes the need for co-creation and action research to bridge the gap between research and operational scaling. The innovation lab has been experimenting with hackathons and special internships with private sector to address knowledge gaps and bridge the divide [10:43 AM] Dahiru Mukhtar asked : Can someone share experience on the best approach on working with SHFs particularly women on the adoption of Solar irrigation technology? 0 upvote | 0 answer | 0 reply [11:00 AM] Hector Santos asked : I'd like to share this web-based tool that addresses water management and facilitates access to irrigation.
