What scalable sustainable technologies and models has the panel seen that can be quickly scaled up to reach millions of smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa?   What govt and donor policies have been, and can be, most helpful to accelerate scale to reach millions?
[2022-05-19 10:07:52] [Francis Hypolite Kemeze] Only about 4% of agricultural land in SSA is irrigated, majority of farmers rely on rainfed, which is at the mercy of sporadic rainfall. The investment in standalone irrigation is huge and many governments are not in the position to provide such financing. What really remain, if we want to make a big impact, is to overcome water shortage in rainfed farming. This could be done through the combination of rainfed and irrigation (using harvested rainfall water, surface, or ground water).

Re USAID’s intention to integrate community-led development (CLD), JM facilitates CLD on a broader scale incl socio-economic growth of women smallholder farmers. Major problems have emerged since a major BINGO irrigation project ended, incl pollution of irrigation water from exploitation of cassiterite. Innovations described (~solar irrig) need to reach these smallholder communities & experts.
