[2022-02-10 09:24:49] [Angela Records] Please add questions for our speakers into the Q&A or chat box. We will have a Q&A session after the presentations. [2022-02-10 09:26:04] [Tawanda Muzhingi] I am interested to learn about tools and frameworks out there used to screen Ag investments for climate change needs [2022-02-10 09:29:05] [Enock Maereka] Heat is a serious threat to wheat production, but using irrigation as a solution is equally limited because the freshwater resources are becoming scarce too! What should we do? [2022-02-10 09:33:01] [Kate Fehlenberg ] Holistic regenerative ag solutions: better breeding + better water mgt + inter-cropping = lower water use, cleaner water, better soils, biodiversity (natural resilience). Of course, easier said than done, but this model needs to be aggressively promoted wherever possible. [2022-02-10 09:34:17] [Michael Gabriel] Kate, you are my hero. [2022-02-10 09:34:56] [Kate Fehlenberg ] 😌 [2022-02-10 09:36:52] [Mira Mihajlovich] Diets - for this group, we're not talking about animals? [2022-02-10 09:40:08] [Kate Fehlenberg ] This is brilliant. Human diet directly impacts and influences Health and Ag product Demand, driving the markets. Genius [2022-02-10 09:41:40] [Kate Fehlenberg ] That said, influencing diet isn't just about health education, as most folks eat what they can afford from whats available. Subsidies need to be shifted to healthy, diverse, regenerative crops/ systems. Need Policy work for market incentives + health education [2022-02-10 09:41:52] [Mira Mihajlovich] "Diet" is, IMHO, very difficult to navigate. That is, should the diet reflect primarily human health, or should environment be the primary driver? [2022-02-10 09:42:26] [Omena Ojuederie] Hello is the session still on? I cannot see any presentation on the dashboard [2022-02-10 09:43:48] [Faith Tarr] @ Omenia, yes, the presenter is still speaking to slides. Try exiting and returning to the webinar to troubleshoot. [2022-02-10 09:50:36] [Philippe Chabot] Hi, On the matter of CC and crop yields in Africa, IFPRI has done quite a lot of work on this over the years. This is one pub I ran across after a quick review- https://www.ifpri.org/publication/climate-change-impact-key-crops-africa [2022-02-10 09:52:15] [Omena Ojuederie] Thanks [2022-02-10 10:02:06] [Guest] Hello everyone, Larry Schaefer here, everything aquaponics, climate-proof, off-grid food production starting with workforce development training programs. Larry@schaeferglobal.com, www.schaeferglobal.com. [2022-02-10 10:07:35] [Geoffrey Morris] This paper that came out yesterday demonstrates the impact of global breeder networks, may be of interest to the group https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abj4633 [2022-02-10 10:07:58] [Faith Tarr] We hear you well Mark [2022-02-10 10:13:21] [John Scicchitano] @Chabot thanks, exactly what I was seeking, especially this article: Climate change impact on key crops in Africa. Look at the projected yield losses for sorghum in West Africa! [2022-02-10 10:16:28] [John Scicchitano] The growing prospects for climate finance for climate smart ag provide us with opportunity for agribusiness, especially as the climate finance community increasing deploys capital to adaptation. [2022-02-10 10:20:51] [Larry Schaefer] Africa, keep your non-GM & non-GMO stance. Outside of the US, Mexico has adopted this and China is considering it. [2022-02-10 10:21:33] [Mira Mihajlovich] What Larry said [2022-02-10 10:22:54] [Kate Fehlenberg ] Larry can you expand on reasons? Is it bc seeds cant be re-used/ must buy new ones every year + more inputs, or...? [2022-02-10 10:25:27] [Adam saffer] Greetings from Cape Cod, MA. I run Gateway Development International (GDI), which focuses on raising funding and providing partnership and strategic advisory services for agribusinesses in Africa. asaffer@gateway-development.com [2022-02-10 10:25:28] [Larry Schaefer] That’s part of it, not being able to use the seeds you’re harvesting for the next planting. But the worst thing are the presence of the chemicals that are integrated with the seed. [2022-02-10 10:25:43] [Michael Gabriel] when breeding for heat and drought/aridity, do breeders also take into account worsened soil biomes and other aspects of poorer soil? [2022-02-10 10:27:47] [Adam saffer] Currently focusing on alfalfa, aquaculture, and tree crops. Looking for organizations with experience in these value chains in Africa. [2022-02-10 10:28:02] [Michael Gabriel] second question, if i may: in terms of action-learning, uptake and scaling - I haven't heard anything about partnering with international NGOs. Is this seens as ineffective, is that why i rarely hear any CGIAR types talking about this? [2022-02-10 10:29:50] [Larry Schaefer] If you’re considering mechanization and going bigger you have to understand good soil Managment practices to protect the microbes that are essential in the soil. If you don’t you will become a slave to the fertilizer companies. [2022-02-10 10:30:03] [Ida Yamaswari] how did you engage the smallholder farmers initially to develop these GM products? how did you come up with these sets of solutions? to what extent the farmers were participating in the process, and able to identify and choose the solutions themves? [2022-02-10 10:30:50] [Kate Fehlenberg ] @Michael - this is an excellent point and there's evidence/ experience of other dev actors in Ag doing this very effectively. Some CGs like ICRISAT and Bioversity do this better than others, but absolutely needs to part of larger PPP strategy for CGs for scale, as INGOs are often deeply embedded in target communities and have Education, Distribution and Livelihood programs to be leveraged. [2022-02-10 10:31:55] [Michael Gabriel] third question :-) Mark Edge, i think you showed that DroughtTego had 53% higher yields than commercial/check hybrids. And then you said TELA yielded 43% more than check/non-GMO. Therefore, DroughtTego has a significnatly higher yield, no? Or what did I miss? Thanks. [2022-02-10 10:32:41] [Andrew] @Larry consider the impacts of pesticides on predators bees and other pollinators as well as on human health. Bt crops in contrast are targeted at their pests reducing the need and risks of pesticide intervention. [2022-02-10 10:33:22] [Andrew] besides the improvement in yields for low productivity agric [2022-02-10 10:33:29] [Larry Schaefer] @Andrew. Yes, the pollinators are essential too! [2022-02-10 10:35:25] [Michael A Saltz] @Michael Gabriel If you have questions for the speakers, please use the Q&A function located at the bottom right. [2022-02-10 10:35:47] [Larry Schaefer] I lost the presenters? [2022-02-10 10:37:21] [Guest] I reconnected. [2022-02-10 10:47:54] [Devona Bell] Why not use cover crops and planting into them to have no till practices? [2022-02-10 10:49:14] [Dan Strempke] Are strip till strategies endorsed/promoted to address soil health? [2022-02-10 10:52:57] [Kate Fehlenberg ] Green cover cropping and inter-cropping has been researched/ tested/ promoted a lot via CIMMYT's Sustainable Intersification Program. You can search the site or look for publications from Christian Thierfelder [2022-02-10 10:53:43] [Thu Zar Khin] very fruitful presentation and answering on each question, thanks a lot. let me leave since power cut in my area and connection is not good [2022-02-10 10:55:19] [Guest] You can also increase the nitrogen in the soil by incorporating livestock operations in your fields after harvest. [2022-02-10 10:55:59] [Philippe Chabot] Hi John, [2022-02-10 10:56:00] [Victor Kommerell] FAW: https://www.cimmyt.org/tag/fall-armyworm/ & https://www.cabi.org/isc/fallarmyworm [2022-02-10 10:57:06] [Philippe Chabot] Hi John, Happy to be of assistance. As I noted, IFPRI has done a lot of work in this area. The link I sent over seemed to address the question most directly, but worth also exploring their work a bit further [2022-02-10 10:58:55] [Geoffrey Morris] Mark Cooper and colleagues have shown that the Pioneer (Corteva) corn breeding programs are not a centralized systems, but de-centralized network (see Fig. 3) http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/CP14007 [2022-02-10 10:59:35] [Michael Gabriel] Thank you very much! [2022-02-10 10:59:59] [Hamza Amhal] Thank you [2022-02-10 11:00:04] [Felix Atamba] Thank you [2022-02-10 11:00:19] [Indranil Bhattacharjee ] thank you -----------------------------------------------
