Current Scientific Literature in Livestock Systems Keeps Expanding
While the relatively young field of research in food systems and our specialty—livestock systems—is growing rapidly, sifting through its scholarly literature can be challenging. One solution is to begin with our growing list of journal articles based on research conducted since 2016.
The most recent review article in Frontiers in Nutrition is very comprehensive: Benefits and Risks of Smallholder Livestock Production on Child Nutrition in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. It synthesizes hundreds of publications and studies to characterize risks from zoonotic diseases and benefits from animal-source foods. All authors are affiliated with the University of Florida.
You can access more than 75 articles produced by researchers who are part of or affiliated with the Livestock Systems Innovation Lab. It is possible to scan the list or search the page for keywords that match your interests.
Special issues of journals
Two special journal issues offer collections of articles around a common theme. A collection in the Journal of Dairy Science explores sustainably increasing milk production for improving nutrition in low- and middle-income countries. The articles are based on insights shared during the 2019 “MILK Symposium: Improving Milk Production, Quality, and Safety in Developing Countries.”
The second special issue in Global Food Security approaches nutrition-sensitive agriculture as a lens for addressing the intersection of economic development and human health in low- and middle-income countries. The centrality of the livestock sector in these contexts challenges researchers and development practitioners to incorporate nutrition concerns into their approaches.
You can look forward to the third special issue being prepared by the Agronomy Journal, slated for release in early 2022.
