Webinar Opportunity: APEC FSCF Whole Genome Sequencing Workshop for Food Safety Experts and Policymakers

Event Information
In cooperation with USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) and the Texas A&M University, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FDA/CFSAN) is implementing a multi-year project on Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) & Laboratory Capacity Building of Environmental Testing for Foodborne Pathogens, under the auspices of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)’s Food Safety Cooperation Forum (FSCF) Partnership Training Institute Network. APEC endorsed the workstream in June of 2020, and sector-specific Phase 1 Awareness Webinars were held in December 2020. Should you wish to learn more about the overall workstream in advance of the upcoming workshop, please feel free to check out the merged Phase 1 Awareness Webinar youtube recording, available here.
The 2nd Phase of this workstream will introduce WGS sequencing technology and data analysis methodologies (and the science behind them), and will discuss resource implications, cost, and personnel requirements. The event will provide an overview of current guidelines for implementing and using WGS (GenomeTrakr Network, etc). Event content will also delve into the application of WGS for food safety environmental sampling to better understand the natural variation of foodborne organisms in the environment. A primary focus of the workshop will stress the importance of incorporating new technologies intelligently and efficiently, and emphasis will be placed on identifying current projects, networks, and informational resources in and/or available to APEC economies.
Please register at your earliest opportunity! The workshop is open to food safety stakeholders from government, industry, or academia from any APEC economy*—so please share this invitation widely within your WGS networks. Do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] and [email protected] with any questions or concerns. Queries regarding registration can be directed to [email protected].
