Richard Kohl and Johannes Linn: Scaling up Agriculture

USAID and the Feed the Future initiative recently gathered with Missions and other partners for two Global Learning and Evidence Exchange (GLEE) events on scaling up the use and adoption of agricultural technologies. Dr. Johannes Linn and Dr. Richard Kohl were keynote speakers at the GLEE events in Addis Ababa and Bangkok, respectively. By popular demand, they were invited back for a seminar/webinar at USAID-Washington to recap key messages from the GLEEs and answer staff questions. Scaling is not a new initiative—it’s harvesting what we’ve been doing and figuring out how to move from project-level results to population-level scale to achieve lasting, broad-based impact. It’s about getting our programs right on the ground so they support scaling up of what’s working. Richard Kohl

Richard Kohl
Richard Kohl is the founder and principal of the Center for Large Scale Social Change LLC, which provides strategic thinking, process and systems analysis, and thought partnership and training to support the scaling up of high-impact innovations. He has expertise and experience delivering these services in multiple sectors, including agriculture, health, education, early childhood development, rural poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment and livelihood training. Richard has worked in over thirty countries, with particularly extensive experience in India, Nigeria, Brazil, China, South East Asia, and Central and East Africa. In addition to many social enterprises and NGOs, he has worked with or for international donors like IFAD, USAID, World Bank, UNICEF, UNFPA, DFID and foundations including Ford, Nike, MacArthur, Packard and Rockefeller. Dr. Kohl holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California – Berkeley and a BA with High Honors from Swarthmore College.

Johannes Linn

Johannes Linn
Johannes Linn is a Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. He was Director of the Wolfensohn Center for Development at the Brookings Institution from 2005 – 2010, where he developed a major program of action-oriented research on scaling with IFAD and other partners. From 1991-96, Mr. Linn served as the World Bank’s Vice President for Financial Policy and Resource Mobilization. From January 1996 through September 2003, Mr. Linn held the position of the Bank’s Vice President for Europe and Central Asia (ECA). During Mr. Linn studied law at the Free University, Berlin, Germany. He received his training as an economist at Oxford University, England (BA, 1968), and at Cornell University, USA (PhD, 1972). He is a German National.
