Aflatoxin is a major issue in many USAID Food for Peace (FFP) project areas. We are continually learning more about aflatoxin’s impact on stunting, agricultural best practices to reduce aflatoxin levels, and ways to effectively integrate aflatoxin responses into our programs.
This knowledge sharing event, hosted by TOPS, will be an opportunity to discuss aflatoxin from an agriculture, nutrition and behavior change viewpoint. It is an opportunity for the development community to learn more about aflatoxin and discuss potential interventions from the FFP community. Dr. Kitty Cardwell (USDA-NIFA) will discuss the pre- and post-harvest conditions that favor aflatoxin contamination, as well the health implications of aflatoxin exposure. Mercy Corps’ PROCOMIDA program will present findings from their barrier analysis on aflatoxin conducted in Guatemala through the use of a TOPS Small Grant. There will also be a facilitated panel discussion where the audience will be able to interact with the speakers.
