Webinar: Designing Agricultural Research that Leads to Commercialization

After exploring the success factors of commercialization in last year’s webinar, From Lab to Market: Success Factors for Commercializing Agricultural Technologies, a new report from Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation explores recommendations to USAID and research institutions on how to best improve the commercialization approach, increase the success factor in commercializing research, and how to move forward with research to commercialization.
Focusing on designing agricultural research-related interventions with commercialization as the intended scaling pathway, we found that there is no set formula to guarantee success to research, but a collection of factors that will guide your research. Our recommendations revolve around these two topics:
- Involving the private sector in strategy setting, program design, and implementation.
- Facilitating the commercialization process through capacity development and an enabling environment.

Virginia Sopyla, Sopyla Consulting LLC
Virginia is a consultant focusing on international agricultural development. Most of her work involves an element of bringing the public and private sectors together to benefit smallholder farmers. Recently, she worked with USAID’s Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation to conduct a study of success factors for commercializing publicly-funded agricultural research

Mojdeh Bahar, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Mojdeh is the assistant administrator for Technology Transfer at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). She has broad responsibility managing the intellectual property that evolves from the research program of the agency and serves as a resource for management of intellectual property and technology transfer across the USDA.
Iddo Dror, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
Iddo is the program leader, Impact at Scale, at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In his current role, Iddo is responsible for the design and execution of development-oriented projects at ILRI, drawing on expertise from across ILRI’s entire research portfolio.
Dr. Adegbola Tolulope Adesogan, Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems
Gbola is currently a professor of animal nutrition and director and principal investigator of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems. The lab aims to sustainably intensify animal source-food production, marketing and consumption in eight countries in order to improve the nutrition, health and incomes.
